The Chicago Area Drywall Finishers JATC

The Chicago Area Drywall Finishers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee is dedicated to developing Apprentice trainees into skilled professional drywall finishing Journeymen for Painters District Council No. 14 and the employer members of Chicago Council PDCA/FCA (the Painting & Decorating Contractors Association & Finishing Contractors Association) and Midwest Wall and Ceiling Contractors.  The objective of both the JATC programs is to provide the Union Contractor employer with a qualified, highly productive, safe workforce.



Drywall Finishing Apprentices have a two-year Apprenticeship. Their wages increase during that period of time, beginning at 40% of Journeyman Scale and working up to scale. Upon completing all requirements for graduation, the successful Apprentice graduates to Journeyman status.

-Repairs & Corrections
-Sprayed Fire Sealants
-Stilt Safety Certification
-Tools of the Trade
-Wiping Angle Tapes

Drywall Finishers Apprenticeship Wage Scale

You are hereby notified than in accordance with the agreement entered into between PAINTERS DISTRICT COUNCIL #14 and MIDWEST WALL AND CEILING CONTRACTORS the following DRYWALL FINISHERS APPRENTICE wage scale is in effect as of JUNE 1, 2018 based on Journeyman rate of $46.55 per hour.
Pay Period Percent of Journeyman Scale Per Hour Rate
During 60 day Probationary Period 40% $18.62
61 days to 1000 Hours 50% $23.28
1001 to 2000 Hours 60% $27.93
2001 to 3000 Hours 70% $32.59
3001 to 4000 Hours 80% $37.24
4001 ———- Hours 100% $46.55
Upon completion of the term of two (2) years or four thousand (4000) hours, whichever occurs later, the Drywall Finishers Apprentice will then step into the rank of Journeyman.
About the Drywall Finishers Apprenticeship Program

  • The Drywall Finishers Apprenticeship Program is a two (2) year program sponsored by Painters District Council #14 and the Drywall Contractors who are signatory to an agreement with the Union.
  • The Apprentices learn the trade while working on the job for Union Wages. Apprentices attend classes for
    59 weeks: one (1) day each week for eight (8) hours per B.A.T. requirements.




Mr. Michael L. Krawiec
Director of Apprenticeship and Training
Mr. Krawiec completed his three-year Apprenticeship and worked for 15 years as a Journeyman painter prior to serving the past seven years as a Specialty Instructor in faux finishes, woodgraining, and marbleizing. His credentials include training certifications from OSHA, IUPAT, Red Cross, and the City of Chicago. He has done ceiling restorations at the Northwestern Medical Library and LaSalle Bank. He holds an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences from Marshall University and received his B. A. degree in Education from the National Labor College in May, 2008.
